FAQ

 

Will I get a certificate after completing the class?

Yes. Students who successfully complete the class will receive a Certificate of Accomplishment signed by the instructor.

 

What resources will I need for the class?

It would be helpful but not essential if students have online access to several free programs from the internet (e.g., Google Earth) to visualize data provided throughout the course.

Oceanography Basics 

 

SLAM offers individuals a course on basic oceanography in conjunction with IOMAC – Indian Ocean Marine Affairs Co-operation. This course provides basic information on oceanography relevant to Sri Lankan waters. Oceanography is interesting because it involves so many of the sciences.

 

What You Will Learn
  • How to identify and explain the various physical features found in the ocean.

  • How elements such as carbon, oxygen, nitrogen and phosphorus are created and distributed.

  • How gravity, wind, friction, radiation and the Earth's rotation determine the temperature of the ocean, the flow of currents and the patterns of salinity.

  • How heat exchange takes place between the ocean and the atmosphere and how that affects sea conditions.

  • How each animal is an important link in its food chain and how each chain forms a complex food web within the marine ecosystem.

  • About interrelationships between different aspects of the ocean, and how these interrelationships govern earth processes.

  • How a drop of water that falls in the hill country is connected to a drop of water at the bottom of the ocean.

  • About the major issues affecting the coastal environment, such as pollution and how to correct the mismanagement of resources.

  • To devise a plan to reduce your individual contribution to marine problems.

Essential Seamanship

 

SLAM offers individuals the Essential Seamanship course. This course provides an introduction to the basic skills required before taking a small boat to sea or taking an active part in running a boat.

 

The course covers (i) terms, (ii) charts, (iii) equipment, (iv) safety, (v) anchoring and mooring, (vi) navigation, (vii) communications, (viii) rules of the road, (ix) meteorology, (x) disasters, (xi) pilotage and planning (xii) testing.

 

What You Will Learn
  • How to read marine charts.

  • What equipment you should have on board.

  • How to apply the “rules of the road”.

  • How to navigate safely at sea.

  • How to secure a boat that is stopped.

  • About safety precautions and how to handle disasters

  • How to plan your voyage.

Required experience: At least 20 at sea hours is recommended but not essential.

Marine Mammal Introduction

 

SLAM offers individuals a course on marine mammals in conjunction with CRIOMM – Centre for Research on Indian Ocean Marine Mammals. This course provides basic information to identifying and appreciating marine mammals in Sri Lankan waters.

 

The course covers (i) terminology, (ii) morphology, (iii) behaviour, (iv) distribution (v) movements & migration, (vi) taxonomy, (vii) status, (viii) strandings, (ix) whale-and-dolphin watching “Best Practices” (x) when & where to go whale-and-dolphin watching (xi) ID quiz.

 

What You Will Learn
  • About the diversity and distinguishing characteristics of marine mammals.

  • How to interpret marine mammal behaviour.

  • Field observation methods and techniques.

  • Where and when you can expect to find each species.

  • How to handle your vessel in the vicinity of cetaceans.

  • How to plan your whale-and-dolphin watching trips.

  • How to get much more out of your whale watching trips.

  • The laws and guidelines pertaining to whale-and-dolphin watching.

  • How to formulate an appropriate response if you find a stranded animal.

Marine Mammal Intermediate

 

SLAM offers individuals a 4-day course on marine mammals in conjunction with CRIOMM – Centre for Research on Indian Ocean Marine Mammals. The course will consist of illustrated lectures and audiovisual presentations, as well as boat trip aboard a local vessel.

  • Discovering Marine Mammals: Groups | Families | Morphology | How to tell them apart.

  • MM Behaviour: Terminology | Behaviours | Stranding.​

  • Marine Mammal Identification: Morphology | How to go about identification | Species description | Key identification | Diagnostic characteristics | “easily confused with” | Taxonomy | Status.

  • Oceanography: Geography | Geology | Submarine canyons | Topography | Weather patterns | Sea conditions | Currents | Nutrient cycles | Food chain.

  • MM Distribution: Distribution of marine mammals in SL waters by geographical location, month (season) and bathymetry (depth) | Locating marine mammals.

Day 3: Practical at sea allowing you to put all the theory you have been taught into practice.

All students that successfully complete the Marine Mammal Enthusiast course will receive a certificate after completing a feedback form.

Scuba Diving

 

This course, brought to you by SLAM in conjunction with a reputable dive centre, provides you with a passport to become a diver at beginners level. The theory can be studied in the comfort of your own home through e-learning. During the practical course you will be guided through swimming pool exercises and 4 open water dives to meet all the standards necessary to become a self-reliant and safe diver.

 

To participate, a minimum age of 18 years is required and a medical statement is to be filled out. If necessary, an approval of a physician is to be obtained.

 

Food and accommodation are provided during the course, however transportation is not included (available on request) to and from the main training venue in Kalpitiya, Sri Lanka at the start and end of the course. Exact location details will be given out to successful applicants as soon as they are approved.
