Maritime heritage is the preservation and protection of valuable marine related historical, cultural, and archaeological resources within Sri Lanka and its waters.
Physical maritime heritage resources are best enjoyed without disturbing them and leaving them just as they are. In some rare cases, such as the Avondster in Galle, careful archaeological recovery followed by long-term preservation of these artifacts in
a museum are carried out for present and future generations to enjoy. Their disappearance or destruction would be an irreversible loss to humanity.
A deeper understanding of our society and the nation’s rich maritime legacy is not possible without knowledge of her maritime heritage.
