Marine Life

Marine life is the essence of Marine Biology which includes the science, biology, taxonomy, morphology, behavior, and ecological relationships of marine life that inhabits our ocean.

Marine biology is the study of life in the oceans and other saltwater environments such as estuaries and lagoons. All animal and plant life forms are included from microscopic plankton all the way to the majestic blue whale, the largest creature on earth.

In the following pages of this section we explore several species of marine life which could be of interest to most.

Marine species databases are included along with information relating to the presence of species in Sri Lankan waters, the best times and locations to see them and their conservation status. Advice on ethical and safe enjoyment of Sri Lanka's amazing marine life is provided. Use these guidelines in conjunction with the information on protection laws.
